Childless Cat Lady — Original Ricamo Strano Embroidery

Childless Cat Lady was one of the first pieces I created—and the work that ultimately became the beginning of my business.

The piece was created in response to JD Vance’s widely reported 2021 remarks referring to several Democratic political figures as “childless cat ladies.” The comments resurfaced prominently during the 2024 presidential campaign and became the subject of widespread public commentary and satire. I took the phrase and turned it into embroidery: a vintage photograph of a gleefully expressive woman, her dress transformed with dense, dimensional hand stitching and the words CHILDLESS CAT LADY embroidered above her.

It has since become a little piece of Ricamo Strano history—the work that helped set the direction for what I do today: combining vintage imagery, hand embroidery, humor, women’s history, and contemporary culture.

Each Childless Cat Lady is individually made by hand. Because every piece is hand embroidered, slight variations in stitching are natural and make each one unique.
