Description

Original Hand-Embroidered Artwork | Costume Parisien Collection

A study in Regency elegance, delicate needlework, and the fashionable world of early nineteenth-century Paris.

Part of the Ricamo Strano Costume Parisien Collection, this one-of-a-kind mixed-media artwork combines a historical French fashion illustration with beautifully detailed hand embroidery.

At the center stands an elegantly dressed Parisian woman wearing a soft green gown with a high waist, long sleeves, and delicate ruching along the neckline and hem. Her fashionable bonnet and small pink accessory complete the ensemble.

The original French caption reads “Robe de Taffetas garnie en Ruches,” meaning “Taffeta dress trimmed with ruching.”

On either side of the figure, two decorative embroidered borders introduce a beautiful contrast of texture and pattern.

One features flowing green lines and ornamental curves, while the other incorporates delicate pink floral motifs framed by scalloped green embroidery. Together, they evoke the elaborate textile embellishments and decorative needlework that were so important to nineteenth-century fashion.

Presented against a vibrant lime-green mat, the piece brings a contemporary energy to its historical inspiration.

A Little Fashion History

During the early nineteenth century, Parisian fashion embraced high-waisted silhouettes, lightweight fabrics, and an increasing emphasis on delicate trimmings and decorative details.

Fashion publications such as Costume Parisien documented these changing styles, illustrating not only fashionable garments but also the accessories, textile patterns, and embellishments that helped define an elegant wardrobe.

Ruching, created by gathering or manipulating fabric into decorative folds, added texture and movement to otherwise relatively simple silhouettes.

This artwork celebrates that relationship between fashionable dress and decorative needlework, transforming historical inspiration into a contemporary embroidered composition.
