Description
A little piece of Parisian fashion history, reimagined in thread.
This one-of-a-kind textile artwork brings an early 19th-century French fashion illustration to life through colorful hand embroidery.
Based on plate No. 62 from Costume Parisien, the original illustration depicts a fashionable woman wearing a delicate white ensemble with a pale blue sash, an elaborate bonnet, and a coordinating parasol.
The French caption reads:
“Capote de percale, guimpe de mousseline, robe de percale.”
Translated as: “Percale bonnet, muslin guimpe, and percale dress.”
The figure embodies the romantic elegance of Regency-era fashion, with its high waistline, airy fabrics, and delicate accessories.
Alongside the illustration, I have hand-embroidered two oversized blue blossoms with soft green foliage. A bold scalloped border of crimson and golden-yellow stitching adds a playful contrast to the delicate historical image.
The embroidery transforms a historical fashion plate into a contemporary work of textile art, celebrating the relationship between fashion illustration, decorative needlework, and women’s creative history.
