A Parisian Promenade — Regency Fashion & Floral Embroidery | Original Textile Art

Original Hand-Embroidered Artwork | Costume Parisien Collection

A fashionable stroll through nineteenth-century Paris, where delicate muslin gowns, elaborate bonnets, and exquisite embroidery defined the art of dressing.

Part of the Ricamo Strano Costume Parisien Collection, A Parisian Promenade combines a historical French fashion illustration with vibrant hand embroidery, bringing together two traditions of decorative artistry.

The central illustration depicts an elegantly dressed woman wearing a flowing white gown, a beautifully trimmed bonnet, and a delicate shoulder cape. She carries a parasol, the quintessential accessory of the fashionable nineteenth-century woman.

Beside her, a richly embroidered floral design introduces a striking contrast to the restrained elegance of the fashion plate.

Deep purple blossoms, bright green foliage, golden-green stems, and a winding coral-colored ribbon create an ornamental composition inspired by the decorative needlework of the period. A delicate scalloped border in teal completes the design.

The artwork is presented in a vibrant lime-green mat, creating a playful contrast between historical fashion and contemporary color.

A Little Fashion History

The original French fashion plate is titled Costume Parisien, with the accompanying description:

“Chapeau de gaze, robe de mousseline, pèlerine de percale.”

Translation: Gauze bonnet, muslin dress, and percale shoulder cape.

These garments reflect the fashionable vocabulary of the early nineteenth century, when lightweight cotton fabrics, high-waisted silhouettes, and delicate accessories dominated women’s dress.

Muslin was especially prized for its soft drape and association with the neoclassical fashions that emerged around the turn of the nineteenth century. Pèlerines, small capes or shoulder coverings, provided another opportunity for fashionable layering and decorative detail.

By pairing this historical fashion illustration with colorful floral embroidery, the artwork celebrates the relationship between clothing, textile ornament, and women’s decorative arts.
