Description
An icon within an icon.
This one-of-a-kind textile artwork features Marilyn Monroe transformed through hand embroidery into a contemporary interpretation of the Sacred Heart. Her black-and-white portrait is printed onto fabric and embellished with a vivid red embroidered heart surrounded by radiating metallic gold stitches.
Inside the heart appears a second image of Monroe—a portrait within a portrait that plays with ideas of devotion, celebrity, femininity, and the construction of the Hollywood icon.
Few figures have been looked at, photographed, reproduced, and mythologized as extensively as Marilyn Monroe. By borrowing the visual language of devotional imagery, this piece considers the almost religious way Hollywood creates and preserves its stars: the woman becomes image, the image becomes icon, and the icon lives on long after the person herself.
The brilliant red mat echoes the embroidered heart, creating a dramatic contrast with the monochrome photograph and gold thread.
