Description
Fashion history, reconstructed in thread.
This one-of-a-kind textile artwork features a portrait of Marie Antoinette, transformed with an elaborate hand-embroidered silver-gray garment. Dense, dimensional stitching builds outward from the original image, creating an exaggerated high collar, voluminous sleeves, and sweeping silhouette inspired by the extraordinary fashions of the late 18th-century French court.
Marie Antoinette remains one of fashion history’s most recognizable figures. Her carefully constructed public image—and her association with elaborate dress, towering hairstyles, luxury textiles, and the work of celebrated marchande de modes Rose Bertin—helped make fashion an important part of her enduring cultural mythology.
Here, historical portraiture is disrupted by contemporary fiber work. The embroidery literally gives the sitter a new wardrobe, allowing the garment to become three-dimensional and extend beyond the printed image.
Displayed in a natural wood oval embroidery hoop measuring approximately 6″ × 4″, the hoop becomes part of the finished artwork.
